James Cleveland

The Rev. James Cleveland was born in Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Cleveland began his musical training under the tutelage of Professor Thomas A. Dorsey. He sang with many great gospel groups, three of which were the Roberta Martin Singers, The Mahalia Jackson Singers and the Caravans. He organized the Cleveland Singers and maintains that group today. He has recorded 54 albums, 12 of which are gold or platinum. Mr. Cleveland records on the Savoy label. He is pastor of Cornerstone Institutional Baptist Church in Los Angeles, California and is founder and president of the Gospel Music Workshop of America. He has been awarded a doctorate degree from Temple Bible College, a grammy award, Billboard Magazine Trendsetter Award, the National Association of Negro Musicians, Ebony Magazine Artist Award and NATRA’s award as best gospel artist. He is called the king of Gospel Music by his constituents.
