George Bennard

Converted to Christianity at an early age while attending a meeting of the Salvation Army. He had a strong desire to be a gospel minister but because of financial problems, found higher education to be beyond his reach. Thus, he studied through association with other ministers and through his own private study and reading. For several years, he was a brigade leader of the Salvation Army, later becoming an evangelist for the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States and Canada. Composer of over 300 gospel songs, his most widely known song is the beloved “Old Rugged Cross”.
